Frequently Asked Questionsservices

Who qualifies for VillageCare at 46 & Ten?

In order to live at VillageCare at 46 & Ten, you must be:

*62 or older.

*Independent in mobility (able to walk with or without assistive devices such as canes, walkers or, if in a wheelchair, be able to get in and out independently and able to move about without assistance).

* Can communicate and make needs and wishes known.

If seniors can walk and communicate, why would they need this type of housing?

Even though a person can walk and make his or her needs known, that individual still might need help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, toileting or managing the proper use of medications. Or, a currently independent individual might want to live in a setting where he or she can obtain hands-on help if and when the need arises.

Are there other reasons healthy, independent people choose this type of housing?

Yes. Some people don’t want to be in the business of hiring and supervising home help, nor do they want someone spending several hours a day in their home. In a senior living community, such as ours, you can arrange for help when you need it and still maintain your privacy and autonomy. Another reason healthy, independent people choose senior living is for companionship. Our community offers many opportunities for people to socialize and make new friends.

How do I choose a senior residence?

When looking at senior housing, you need to understand the costs. Make sure that you know what is included in the monthly fee. By doing so, you can make an educated affordability decision.

Second, think about what is important for you to be comfortable. Some aspects of life you need to consider are:

*Physical surroundings that appeal to you.

*Activities you like to do.

*Food prepared to your taste.

*Interests that you can pursue.

*Companions with whom you will enjoy spending time and with whom you will be compatible.

*Make a checklist for yourself of key information you want to find out.

Does insurance cover any costs of senior housing?

Insurance does not cover room and board. Some long-term care insurance policies can be configured to cover the services provided by licensed home care agencies. Check with your policy’s customer service center to see what your long-term care policy covers.

Medicaid only covers a certain type of assisted living program in New York State. When looking at senior living programs, it is important that you ask the operator whether or not they are licensed to accept Medicaid in payment of services.

What if my money runs out?

This is an important consideration and one of the reasons that VillageCare at 46 & Ten operates a Medicaid Assisted Living Program (ALP). In most assisted living residencies, if you become unable to afford the monthly service fees, you are forced to seek an alternative living arrangement. At our residence, if this situation occurs, you may be eligible for Medicaid, and assist with the NYS assisted living program eligibility process. In order to be eligible for the ALP, you must meet both the financial, as well as medical criteria.
